6장

 

Like a Deer from the Hunter

1-5

 

Dear friend, if you've gone into hock with your neighbor or locked yourself into a deal with a stranger, 

친구여 네가 이웃의 보증을 서거나 낯선 자와의 거래에 꼼짝없이 말려들었다면,

 

*hock : 저당(전당) v. 저당 잡히다.

 

If you've impulsively promised the shirt off your back and now find yourself shivering out in the cold, 

겉옷이라도 벗어 주겠다고 충동적으로 약속했다가 이제 바깥 추운 데서 와들와들 떠는 신세가 되었다면

 

* impulsively : 충동적으로

*  shiver : v. (추위,두려움,흥분 등) (몸을) 떨다, n. 전율

 

Friend, don't waste a minute, get yourself out of that mess.

친구여, 한시도 허비하지 말고 궁지에서 벗어나라.

 

You're in that man's clutches!

너는 그 사람의 손아귀에 사로잡혔다!

 

* clutch : v. 움켜잡다 n 손아귀

 

Go, put on a long face; act desperate.

침통한 얼굴로 찾아가 절박한 사정을 호소하여라

 

* long face : 시무룩[침통]한 얼굴

 

Don't procrastinate-there's no time to lose.

지체하지 마라. 허비할 시간이 없으니..

 

* procrastinate : 미루다, 질질 끌다.

 

 

Run like a deer from the hunter, fly like a bird from the trapper!

사슴이 사냥꾼의 손에서 벗어나듯 달아나라.

새가 덫을 놓는 자의 손에서 벗어나듯 날아가라!

 

6-11

You lazy fool, look at an ant.

게으르고 어리석은 자여, 개미를 보아라.

 

Watch it closely; let it teach you a thing or two.

개미를 자세히 지켜보고 한 수 배워라.

 

Nobody has to tell it what to do.

아무도 할 일을 일러 주지 않지만,

 

All summer it stores up food; at harvest it stockpiles provisions.

개미는 여름내 먹이를 마련하고 추수철에 양식을 비축한다.

 

* stockpile : n. 비축량 v. 비축하다

* provision : 1.공급,제공 2. 대비,준비

 

So how long are you going to laze around doing nothing?

너는 언제까지 하는 일 없이 빈둥거리려느냐?

 

How long before you get out of bed?

언제 잠자리에서 일어나려느냐?

 

A nap here, a nap there, a day off here, a day off there, sit back, take it easy - do you know what comes next?

"여기서도 자고, 저기서도 자자. 여기서도 하루 쉬고, 저기서도 하루 쉬자. 편히 앉아 느긋하게 쉬자" 하면 무슨일이 닥치는지 아느냐?

 

Just this : You can look forward to a dirt-poor life, poverty your permanent houseguest!

바랄 것은 단 하나, 찢어지게 가난한 생활뿐이다. 가난이 네 영원한 식객이 된다!

 

* dirt-poor : 아주 가난한, 극빈의

 

 

12-15

Always Cooking Up Something Nasty

 

Riffraff and rascals talk out of both sides of their mouths.

쓰레기 같은 인간과 악당들은 한 입으로 두말한다.

 

* Riffraff : (사회의)쓰레기들

* rascal : 악당

 

They wink at each other, they shuffle their feet, they cross their fingers behind their backs.

서로 눈짓을 교환하며 발을 질질 끌면서 지킬 마음도 없는 거짓 약속을 일삼는다.

 

* shuffle : 발을 (질질) 끌며 걷다

* they cross their fingers behind their backs : 손짓으로 속이다.

 

Their perverse minds are always cooking up something nasty, always stirring up trouble. 

그들의 사악한 마음은 끊임없이 고약한 일을 꾸미고 언제나 말썽을 일으킨다.

 

* perverse : 비뚫어진 

* cook up : (남을 속이기 위해) ~을 꾸며내다

* nasty : 1. 끔찍한,형편없는 2.못된 3.위험한,험악한

 

Catastrophe is just around the corner for them, a total smashup, their lives ruined beyond repair.

머지않아 그들에게 재앙이 닥치면 완전히 파멸하고 망해서 회복되지 못하리라.

 

* Catastrophe : 1. 참사,재앙

* around the corner : 아주 가까운

* smashup : 대충돌, 완전 붕괴, 파괴

 

16-19

Seven Tings GOD Hates

하나님이 미워하시는 일곱 가지

 

Here are six things GOD hates, and one more that he loathes with a passion :

여기 하나님이 미워하시는 여섯가지고 있고 그분이 몹시 싫어하시는 한 가지가 더 있다.

 

* loath : ~하기를 꺼리는 , 혐오하다

 

eyes that are arrongant, a tongue that lies, hands that muder the innocent, a heart that hatches evil plots,

거만한 눈, 거짓말하는 혀, 죄없는 사람을 살해하는 손, 흉계를 꾸미는 마음

 

* arrongant : 오만한,거만한 

* hatch : 부화하다, 부화시키다 2. (비밀리에) 만들어내다.

* evil plot : 사악한 줄거리(흉계)

 

 

feet that race down a wicked track, a mouth that lies under oath, a troublemaker in the famaily.

악한 길로 급히 달려가는 발, 거짓 증언하는 증인의 입, 집안에서 분쟁을 일으키는 자.

 

* wicked track : 악한 길

* oath : 맹세, 서약, 선서

 

 

20-23 

Warning on Adultery

부도덕에 대한 경고

 

* Adultery : 간통

 

Good friend, follow your father's good advice; don't wander off from your mother's teachings.

착한 친구여, 아버지의 유익한 훈계를 따르고 어머니의 가르침에서 벗어나지 마라.

 

Wrap yourself in them from head to foot; wear them like a scarf around your neck.

그것을 머리에서 발끝까지 휘감고 스카프처럼 목에 둘러라.

 

Wherever you walk, they'll guard you; when you wake up, they'll tell you what's next.

네가 어디로 가든지 그것이 너를 안내하고 어디서 자든지 너르 지켜 주며, 잠에서 깨면 다음에 할 일을 알려 줄 것이다.

 

For sound advice is a beacon, good teaching is a light, moral discipline is a life path.

건전한 훈계는 횃불이고 유익한 가르침은 빛이다. 도덕적 훈계는 생명의 길이다.

24-35

They'll protect you from wanton women, from the seductive talk of some temptress.

그것이 네가 방탕한 여인들에게 빠지지 않고 유혹하는 여자의 호리는 말에 넘어가지 않게 지켜 줄 것이다.

 

* seductive : (성적으로) 유혹적인

 

Don't lustfully fantasize on her beauty, nor be taken in by her bedroom eyes.

그런 여자의 아름다움을 탐내지 말고 욕정 어린 눈길에 홀리지 마라.

 

* lustfully : 탐욕스럽게;음탕하게 

 

you can buy an hour with a whore for a loaf of bread, but a wanton woman may well eat you alive.

빵 한 덩이로 매춘부와 한 시간을 보낼 수 있지만 방탕한 여자는 너를 산 채로 삼킬 수 있다.

 

* whore : 매춘부

* wanton : 타당한 이유 없이, 고의적인(악의적인)

 

Can you build a fire in your lap and not burn your pants?

무릎 위에서 불을 지피는데 바지가 타지 않을 도리가 있느냐?

 

Can you walk barefoot on hot coals and not get blisters?

활활 타는 숯불 위를 맨발로 걷는데 물집이 생기지 않을 재간이 있겠느냐?

 

* barefoot : 맨발

* coal : 숯불

* blister : 물집

 

It's the same when you have sex with your neighbor's wife : Touch her and you'll pay for it.

이웃의 아내와 잠자리를 같이하는 사람의 처지가 이와 같다. 그는 대가를 치르게 될 것이다.

 

No ex-cuse

 어떤 핑계도 통하지 않을 것이다.

 

Hunger is no excuse for a thief to steal; When he's caught he has to pay it back, even if he has to put his whole house in hock. 

배고픔은 도둑질의 구실이 될 수 없다. 훔치다 걸리면 전 재산이 들더라도 훔친 것을 갚아야 한다.

 

Adultery is a brainless act, soul-destroying, self-destructive;

간통은 정신 나간 짓이다. 영혼을 파괴하고 자기를 망가뜨리는 짓이다.

 

Expect a bloody nose, a black eye, and a reputation ruined for good.

코피가 나고 눈은 멍들고 체면이 땅에 떨어진 네 모습을 생각해 보아라.

 

* reputation : 명성

 

For jealousy detonates rage in a cheated husband; wild for revenge, he won't make allow-ances.

배신당한 남편은 질투에 사로잡혀 분노를 터뜨릴 것이다. 복수하겠다고 날뛰면서 조금도 사정을 봐주지 않을 것이다.

 

* detonates : 폭발하다

 

Nothing you say or pay will make it all right; neither bribes or reason will satisfy him.

무슨 말을 해도, 어떤 보상을 해도 소용이 없다. 뇌물도 설득도 통하지 않을 것이다.

* reason : 설득
