4장

 

지혜와 명철을 구하라

Your life is at Stake

 

1-2

listen, friends, to some fatherly advice; sit up and take notice so you'll know how to live.

친구여, 아버지의 훈계를 잘 들어라. 자세를 바로 하고 주의해서 들어라. 그러면 살아갈 방도를 알 게 될 것이다.

 

I'm giving you good counsel; don't let it go in one ear and out the other.

너희에게 유익한 교훈을 한 귀로 듣고 한 귀로 흘려버리지 마라.

 

3-9

When I was a boy at my father's knee, the pride and joy of my mother, He would sit me down and drill me:

내가 아버지 무릎에서 자라는 아이였을 때 어머니의 자랑거리이자 기쁨이었을 때 아버지는 나를 앉혀 놓고 반복해서 말씀하셨다.

 

"Take this to heart. Do what I tell you - live! Sell everything and buy wisdom! Forage for understanding!

"이 가르침을 마음에 새기고 내 말대로 행하여라. 그리하면 네가 살것이다. 모든 것을 팔아 지혜를 사거라. 명철을 찾아 나서라.

 

Don't forget one word! Don't deviate an inch! Never walk away from Wisdom - She guards your life;

내 말을 한 마디도 잊지 말고, 거기서 한 치도 벗어나지 마라. 지혜를 외면하지 마라. 그것이 네 목숨을 지켜 줄 것이다.

 

*deviate : 벗어나다

 

 

love her - she keeps her eye on you.

지혜를 사랑하여라. 그것이 너를 돌봐줄것이다

 

*  keep one's eye : (가장중요한 것에)주의를 기울이다.

 

Above all and before all, do this : Get Wisdom!

무엇보다 먼저 지혜를 얻으라!

 

Write this at the top of your list : Get understanding!

명철을 무엇보다 귀하게 여기고 그것을 구하여라!

 

Throw your arms around her - believe me, you won't regret it ; 

지혜를 껴안으라. 분명히 말하지만, 절대 후회하지 않을 것이다.

 

never let her go - she'll make your life glorious.

지혜를 절대 놓아 보내지 마라. 지혜 덕분에 네가 영광스럽게 살게 될 것이다.

 

She'll garland your life with grace, she;ll festoon your days with beauty.

지혜가 네 삶에 우아한 관을 씌우고 너의 하루하루를 아름답게 장식해 줄 것이다.

 

*garland : n. 화환,화관 v. 화환으로 장식하다.

 

악한 길로 접어들지 마라

10-15

 

Dear friend, take my advice; it will add years to your life.

친구여, 내 훈계를 받아들여라. 그러면 네가 오래 살 것이다.

 

I'm writing out clear directions to Wisdom Way, I'm drawing a map to Righteous Road.

나는 지혜로 가는 길을 정확히 안내하고 올바른 길로 가는 지도를 그린다.

 

I don't want you ending up me in blind alleys, or wasting time making wrong turns.

나는 네가 막다른 골목에 이르거나 길을 잘못들어 시간을 허비하기를 바라지 않는다.

 

*end up : 결국(어떤 처지에)처하게 되다

*blind alley : 길이 막힌 골목, 가망성 없는 일

 

Hold tight to good advice ; don't relax your grip

유익한 교훈을 놓치지 말고 꼭 붙들어라.

 

*relax your grip : 움켜쥔 손을 늦추다/놓다

 

Guard it well - your life is at stake!

그대로 잘 행하여라. 네 목숨이 거기에 달렸다!

 

* your life is at stake : 네 생명이 위태롭다.

 

Don't take Wicked Bypass; don't so much as set foot on that road.

악한 길로 접어들지 말고 아예 발도 들여놓지 마라.

 

* Wicked : 사악한,못된

* Bypass : n.우회도로, v우회하다

 

Stay clear of it ; give it a wide berth. Make a detour and be on your way.

그 길에서 멀찍이 떨어져 비켜 가거라. 

 

*berth : 1. 침상 2. 정박지

*detour : 1.둘러가는 길, 우회로

 

16-17

Evil people ar restless unless they're making trouble ; They can't get a good night's sleep unless they've made life

miserable for somebody. 

악인들은 문제를 일으키지 않으면 마음이 편치 않고, 남을 못살게 굴지 않으면 밤에 잠을 못 잔다.

 

Perversity is their food and drink, violence their drug of choice.

사악함은 그들의 음식이고 폭력은 그들이 고르고 고른 약이다.

 

18-19

The ways of right - living people glow with light; the longer they live, the brighter they shine. 

올곧게 사는 이들의 길은 환히 빛나서 그들이 오래 살수록 더 밝게 빛나지만,

But the road of wrongdoing gets darker and darker - travelers can't see a thing ; they fall flat on their faces.

못된 자들의 길은 점점 더 어두워져서 지나가다가 아무것도 보지 못해 바닥에 고꾸라진다.

 

내 메시지를 외워라

Learn it by heart

 

20-22

Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice.

친구여, 내 말을 잘 듣고 내 목소리에 귀를 기울여라

 

Keep my message in plain view at all times. Concentrate! Learn it by heart!

내 메시지를 항상 잘 보이는 곳에 두고 거기에 집중하여라! 힘써 외워라!

 

*plain view 명백한 시야

 

Those who discover these words live, really live ; body and soul, they're bursting with health. 

이 말을 깨닫는 사람은 참으로 제대로 살고 몸과 영혼이 건강해질 것이다.

 

*bursting with health : 건강미가 넘치다.

 

23-27

Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that's where life starts.

두 눈을 부릅뜨고 네 마음을 지켜라. 마음은 생명의 근원이다.

 

Don't talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip

한 입으로 두말하지 말고 경솔한 농담, 악의 없는 거짓말 ,잡담을 피하여라.

 

*banter : 농담

*white lies : 선의의 거짓말

 

Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions.

똑바로 앞만 쳐다보고 온갖 엉뚱한 것들에는 눈길도 주지마라

 

Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you.

조심조심 걸어라. 그러면 네 앞길이 평탄하게 펼쳐질 것이다.

 

Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust

오른쪽으로나 왼쪽으로나 한눈팔지 말고 악으로부터 멀리 떨어져라.

 

*leave someone in the dust : ~를 크게 앞지르다.
